Web Design Tutorials – Learn The Basics

Coming up with a good web design is a lot easier than designing something completely graphic like a poster. It is also easier than programming since there are web design tools that make it a lot easier to create a website from scratch. This web design tutorial will give you a small overview of these types of programs as well as some general information on how to use these programs.

Finding a Good Web Authoring Tool

While you can use Windows Notepad to create your very first website by typing pure HTML, CSS and JavaScript codes, it is much better to start with a good web authoring tool that provides a friendly interface so you can design a site even if you do not know any form of web coding. Examples of free web authoring tools include KompoZer and Bluefish Editor. Commercial programs like Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression Web give you more editing possibilities.

Starting with a Template Layout

Like creating a new document file, you will start with a clean slate where you can add text, images or other multimedia content through drag-and-drop. But if you want to make your site presentable regardless of screen size, it is best to start with a template layout. A common example of a layout is a site that contains a header, sidebar and body. A layout makes sure that you can properly position the elements on your site.

Incorporating Your Site Elements

Incorporating the various elements to your site design can be a bit clunky depending on what program you are using. But if you want to experience less difficulty in creating that perfect layout, try to make a sketch of your site first. You can use your favorite graphics design program to make your desired site layout including the elements or you can draw it on paper. With a sketch or draft on hand, you can figure out what kind of adjustments are needed after you position the elements.

Observe the HTML Code

Once you have made significant progress in your web design layout, save it to your hard disk and view the HTML code. Every web authoring tool should have an option that lets you see the source code of your site design. If there is a “Split View” option, that option is preferable so you can see how the design translates to code. Observing the code alone should give you an idea on the basics of HTML. What is nice about HTML is that you do not have to compile anything. Once you make a change in the HTML code, the design is automatically updated.

From there, you load various other HTML reference sites like W3Schools so you can broaden your web design skills and do more creative things with the programs that you have.

Web Design Tutorials – Teaching Yourself

At first glance, the main question of how to make a website is simple and, thus, easy to answer even for individuals who have little to no experience with website design and development. Blogger tools, website design tutorials and other resources like books, e-books and classes are widely available, if and when you know where to look in the traditional and digital media.

Of all these available resources, online web design tutorials are the best routes toward learning to develop outstanding websites. When we say outstanding websites, we refer to site that provide for original content, easy-to-navigate pages, and fast loading speed as well as the right tools for SEO and tracking purposes.

Where to Find

Web design tutorials are easy to find in online sites as well as in e-books. Just key in the words and the search engine used (i.e., Google and Yahoo!) will generate hundreds of thousands of results within a few seconds. We always suggest looking at the first two pages of the search results since these are usually the best tutorials available although there’s no harm in searching for other sites on the succeeding pages.

What to Find

The search results will yield a wide variety of web design tutorials from e-books to online classes conducted by instructors. In the case of downloadable e-books, users are provided with step-by-step instruction on web design complete with practical exercises, video guides and even after-sales customer services. As for online classes, students log on to the website to participate in the discussions, listen to the instructors and submit assignments, among other activities.

Which one is the best way on how to make a website? Both are good options for many reasons with your final choice largely determined by your personal preferences in terms of cost, convenience and results.

On one hand, e-books are preferred by individuals who want to learn web design at their own time, pace and space. Whatever issues come up, the best option is calling up customer services or searching for answers online.

On the other hand, online classes are favored by individuals who want the benefits of the active interaction between the students and the instructor. The systematic curriculum is also a desirable aspect of online classes aside from the fact certifications of completion will be provided to the students, which can then be used for business or employment purposes.

What to Expect

Depending on the scope of the web design tutorials, the instruction will include the:

• Aesthetics Aspect – This is where graphic design comes in. The colors, fonts and placement of the photos, text and icons will be decided on with the main aim being to make each page attractive, not to mention comprehensive and informative.

• Technical Aspects – The designer must be knowledgeable about JavaScript, CSS and HTML, among other programming languages. The aim is to make the pages user-friendly, safe and secure.

Indeed, if you want to learn the ins and outs of web design, you must enroll in web design tutorial classes or purchase downloadable e-books.

Web design is a huge industry today. Thanks to the Internet, the process of learning designing languages has become very easy. With online web design tutorials available on so many websites, you can enjoy the convenience of learning during your leisure hours. The best thing about online tutorials is that there are different levels of lessons available. So, beginners as well as advanced learners can find tutorials that are suitable to their skill levels. However, you can gain the maximum benefits of online tutorials only when you choose the right service.

The basics are easy to pick up

Web design tutorials begin from the basics. You don’t need to invest too much into web design tools because all you need is Windows Notepad to learn the basic coding. Some of the basic and the most used languages such as CSS, HTML and JavaScript can be practiced on the Notepad. You can also use more advanced authoring tools that help you edit scripts and create web designs more quickly and efficiently.

Learn the important elements of web design

Learning web design is not all about coding and using graphics. There are a lot of important aspects that web design tutorials teach you. Every website should have a few basic elements, without which the site fails to succeed.

Designing the layout is the most important part of web design. The tutorial should teach you how to bring a balance in the design. Balance refers to equally distributing various elements in the design so that the entire page looks harmonious. You can practice different kinds of designs such as symmetric and asymmetric layouts. In some cases, you might be required to create a discordant design that gives a very dynamic appeal and makes people think. Although a discordant design is not recommended for websites of all genres, it does work well in sites where you need to stimulate the visitor’s mind.

The other most important aspect of web design is to learn how to make the website suitable to target audience in terms of its user-friendliness, easy navigation and visually appealing presentation. Navigation is one of the most basic elements of web design. So, when you learn web design, make sure that you pick up the basics of creating drop down menus and other tricks that aid easy navigation.

It is also important to ensure usability of the site. In order to pick these basics, you need to learn how to analyse and evaluate target audience so that the website can be designed according to their sensibilities.

Although creating the web layout is a very important part of web design, placement of content is the most crucial aspect. In any web design, content is the king and will always remain that way. So, any layout you create should be tailored according to the kind of content required on the page. Adding prominent headers, highlighting texts in the appropriate manner and effective content distribution are some of the skills that a good web design tutorial should teach you.

In addition making the design attractive and meticulous, it is also important that the design have a high degree of SEO compatibility. When you learn these basics, you can build on the knowledge and go on to create more effective web designs.

Web Design Tutorials – Educate Yourself

When you want to create a website on a do-it-yourself basis, you will likely want to undergo web design tutorial sessions. Keep in mind that building an excellent website requires both visual and technical skills, which you may not possess at present but you can learn during the tutorial. However, you must be careful about choosing the web design tutorial program you will be enrolling in. The trends in website design change fast just as the technologies related to the online world (i.e., hardware and software) do, thus, making it critical to stay updated and to stay on top.

Here are the latest trends for 2012 that you should look out for when choosing the web design tutorial program of your choice. These trends will be critical in building the best website for your needs and wants.

HTML5 & CSS3 Standards

When you want to create a website, you should be knowledgeable about programming codes, among other technical aspects. Each year, these programming codes change by leaps and bounds, all of which are aimed toward making websites better in every way possible. The most popular trends nowadays are HTML5 and CSS3, which have been gaining ground since 2011. You must learn these applications so that your website will be updated, too.

Mobile Devices

With the number of users of smartphones increasing with every year, website designers are well-advised to take their needs and wants into consideration. Otherwise, your website will not gain more traffic from smartphone users, which represents more income for your business. Websites with touchscreen capabilities are preferred by users of iPhone, iPad and android phones. Think of these users when designing the layout, icons and buttons of your website and you are well on your way to capturing this important market.

Social Media

Everybody is on social media – or at least, this is the common observation considering the booming popularity of social media sites like Facebook. The individuals and organizations on these social media sites represent yet another lucrative market for your business to tap into. It then becomes crucial to embed social media buttons on your website. Of course, how you use social media to your own advantage is another topic. Suffice it to say that the more prospective customers you reach out to via social media sites, the better for your online presence and, eventually, your bottom line.

Obviously, the aspects of custom fonts, responsive interface design and great layouts are still important in designing websites. Just be sure that even in these typical aspects, you are still on-trend so as to maintain your unique brand. You may even want to update your website on a regular basis as positive trends crop up as well as when your website design tutorials provide for more opportunities for being on top of the trend.

Website Design Tutorials

If you were to ask most website owners (keep in mind that we’re not necessarily talking about professional web designers or other IT professionals here) what the best way is to learn web design, they would say that they found website design tutorials to be the most helpful resource. Like any other kind of tutorial, they are designed to take you step by step through specific tasks so that you can see just what you have to do to get from beginning to end.

A lot of people prefer using tutorials on website design rather than using a book on a specific programming language, a piece of software or taking a series of web design classes since a tutorial’s approach to instruction is a more concrete, easy to use set of information. Each step is a specific action which you can do immediately; a tutorial teaches you how to perform complex tasks by breaking them down into a series of simple tasks. With a little repetition, it’s easy to master many things (including some aspects of website design) this way.

Another advantage of using tutorials to teach yourself website design is that a tutorial gives you just what you need to know right now. You don’t have to learn everything there is to know about, say, the Perl scripting language in order to do one small job when you could read a tutorial about exactly what you need to do at the moment. It is very difficult indeed to find a situation that someone else hasn’t already run into and written a tutorial about, at least in the field of web design.

Tutorials also allow you to learn whenever you like and at your own pace, unlike traditional classroom instruction. Whether the tutorial in question is a book, an article on a website or a video, you can read, watch, or listen to the tutorial whenever you like and if you’re trying to come to grips with an especially complex or difficult task, you can take all the time you need to master each step of the process before you move on to the next.

When you’re trying to learn web design or to solve a particular problem you’ve run into along the way as you build or maintain your site, chances are that you’d like to be able to overcome whatever hurdle you’ve come across so that you can move on to the next challenge. That’s where website design tutorials really excel. Since they’re generally short and focused on a particular issue, they are a great way to not only learn how to solve problems which you can’t find a solution to on your own, but if it fits with your learning style, to learn web design in general. If you enjoy problem solving, you can always teach yourself, turning to tutorials only when you’re truly stumped.

Many of us learn best from tutorials, since they allow us to see (whether in pictures or words) exactly how it’s done – and when you’re able to see something for yourself, you’re much more likely to understand and remember what you’ve learned

Video Notes:

************************1. Create templates************************

Now a, a big problem that I see with business owners and like clients that hire me and, and other WordPress web designers is for every page, they’re designing like, a new page. You know, it’s like well, we need to add a new page to our website. It’s like, oh great, I gotta design a whole nother page.

Now it doesn’t work that way, you need to be creating templates and a lot of website, website themes today support a template based system. So what we do is we create a series of templates that you can now export to the rest of your pages. But it’s still important that those templates.

************************2. Top level Navigation************************

First of all, and of course, you know, like you’re, you’re always, this could be your social media links up here. This could be like your phone number, or an email button.

You know, having those, always able to contact me, buttons, I think is a good idea. Up here you’ve got your navigation tabs. Now, when I first started in this, it was kind of like the thinking that you should have seven navigation tabs. I don’t agree with that anymore.

I think that you need to have like four or five, tops, and they need to be very simple. Every single one of them should be directed at converting a viewer to sale. So you don’t need one of these navigation tabs to say home. Right? Cuz typically your logo will lead you home.

You, you need it to say something like, About Us. What we offer. How to work with us. And our blog. Something like that.

WordPress web design tutorial
Designing a top level web page template

************************3. Sidebar and Footer************************

I believe in side bars. Some people are doing like this whole page design, that’s okay. That’s fine. If that’s the, the intent of your site. I like side bars because it enable me to, to engage with the viewer in different ways.

Use related pages for your web design- It might be helpful to have YouTube. You know, YouTube marketing. Landing page videos. Video production. Video bumpers. You know? Maybe even a tag that says, what are you looking for? And then underneath that I have a little circle there. Which I typically use to represent a testimonial. So maybe you’ve got.

A WordPress testimonial widget right in there, where it’s, every time it’s refreshed, a new testimonial pops up, right. So you’re engaging with the viewer that way. You might even have like social media links on, experimenting with an Instagram box. We’ll see how that turns out. Let’s go to your, I’ll come up to the main page last, go to your footer.

Your footer here is a huge resource. I like to have a three or four box footer that maybe has, like, you know, a summary about us, maybe our social links and then, maybe, like, a schedule, like schedule with me, or a work with me, right. And this could be an image.

Maybe it looks like a contact box, but it’s an image, and when you click it. It will go back to that work with us page, see. And then maybe in here you’ve got something you like your blog roll. Right? So your, your latest and greatest blogs. Or maybe it’s like your most popular blogs which you know, you can, you can work that out with some plug ins.

************************4: Main Page************************

In your main page or top level design page, your main body, let’s go back to that. Okay, we said about 400 words. But look at how I have it structured. I have an image up at the top and then I have some text right next to it. Now underneath that I have more text.

Underneath that I have some bullet points. So basically what you have here is you’ve got, you know, everything you really need to convert that viewer. Right up here, right up there. And then you’re gonna say something like let’s dig into that a little bit more because you don’t want them necessarily moving off of your page, right?
